Benezet Vidal, a felibre, was in Auvergne one of the most remarkable and active Occitan writer of the first half of the 20th century. Disciple of the College of Occitania he promoted and diffused the spelling developed by Estieu and Perbosc in this province. Besides novels and poetry, he devoted himself to the writing of two two works with pedagogical aims, Lo libret de l’escolan auvernhat (the booklet of Occitan schoolboy) published in 1936 and a Gramatica auvernhata (Auvergnate grammar) written in 1943 but never printed. This grammar is clearly following as a model the grammar published by Joseph Salvat just before. It was intended to be normative and pan auvergnate covering all the territory of the old province of Auvergne including the Aurillac area, but leaving aside Velay and High Gevaudan.
