By its very nature, smuggling tends to go unnoticed by both authorities and historical research. Despite that fact and its methodological implications, the study of smuggling opens up many perspectives for the analysis of various phenomena and ideas, such as State formation and functioning, territoriality and borders, the establishment of networks, identities and the sense of belonging. Therefore, smuggling allows for an approach to the diasporic phenomenon that is both innovative and fruitful.
