The truth about the date of Ungaretti's «I Fiumi»? An hypothesis

Abstract

The paper examines the autograph of the poem I fiumi by Giuseppe Ungaretti, in order to explain the inconsistency between the date on the manuscript and the date on the printed tradition. By reading the documents about the poet’s life in 1916 and an analysis of his working method, it was possible to reconstruct his relocations of that summer and provide a hypothesis as to why he changed the poem’s date.
