H. Schuchardt about the study of G. Paul and Leipzig school

Abstract

The article analyzes the critical attitude of the Australian linguist H. Schuchardt, school G. Paul and young grammar theory «phonetic laws». In science, H. Schuchardt is known as the author of the theory of «words and things», who has spearheaded the trend in onomasiological grammar of XX century. Doctrine neogrammarians was negatively perceived by many Western and Russian language researchers. At the same time he stressed that, although the Austrian scientist rejected the historical and psychological ideas and the absolute neogrammarians character of sound laws, he maintained the immutability of random sound changes and the confusion of languages. Nevertheless, the theory of sound laws to be effective for the study of phonetics and activities in this direction can not just be ignored. As demonstrated in the study, H. Schuchardt, adhering to similar principles of historicism and learning things, under-estimated the value of the concept of G. Paul in linguistic development
