Analysis of production spaces in historical houses in Najafabad
Abstract
In the past, houses played an important role as a key component of production in society, and industrial spaces within the structure of historical houses provided opportunities for activities related to family livelihood and economy. The scope of this research includes the city of Najafabad and historical houses that are aligned with past lifestyles, where families' efforts for sustenance were focused on production. This research aims to explore the relationship between house architecture and production in past societies by examining the structure of historical houses in Najafabad. Through studying the spaces of historical houses and collecting written data and conducting interviews, an understanding of current events leading to production and their connection to the house structure is presented. The general method used in this research is descriptive-analytical, involving gathering field data through architectural engagement with historical houses in Najafabad and library data on existing and past houses. Necessary data was obtained through observation, photography, mapping, and note-taking in historical houses, while required information was gathered through interviews with residents and stakeholders. The research first examines household production in past societies, then reconstructs and identifies the industrial spaces within historical houses in Najafabad, followed by an analysis of the spatial layout of production areas within the structure of historical houses in Najafabad. Based on the findings, different types of industrial spaces in historical houses in Najafabad can be categorized into three independent, dependent, and flexible categories, and the layout of industrial spaces in historical houses in Najafabad adheres to hierarchical ownership, spatial-security hierarchy, and health-functional hierarchy.
