Expressive verbs with the meaning "to speak": translation problems

Abstract

This article discusses translating verbal expressives meaning "to speak" from Czech to Ukrainian. Emphasis is placed on verbs expressing intensity, particular on onomatopoeias imitating the sounds of animals and humans. The article focuses not only on specific Ukrainian equivalents found in translations of O. Zaluzhnyi, H. Sybirnyi and S. Masliak, but also on the etymology of these words and finding the most adequate translation variants.
