El Nuevo Luciano de Eugenio by Eugenio de Santa Cruz and Espejo An American dialogue on oratory style and education
Abstract
In 1779, Eugenio Espejo, an author from Quito, wrote a dialogue using a pseudonym: El nuevo Luciano de Quito o despertador de los ingenios quiteños en nueve conversaciones eruditas para el estímulo de la literatura. In the Nuevo Luciano, two residents at Quito talked about a religious sermon and its style. The conversation continues on the colonial American education, the rethorical tradition, the educational contents and methods. They discuss the Jesuitical influence on the colonial educational system. Our purpose, then, will be to analyze these dialogue, the aesthetic debate, the criticism to those times education and the new system of knowledge suggested, a more rational, enlightened and modern system.
