Luis Estrada has become, along with his fellow countrymen and colleagues Alexandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón, one of the four most internationally renowned Mexican directors. Estrada’s work is characterized by an investigation of his country’s situation from the 1940s to the present day, in what is known as his «pentalogy», which includes the film ¡Que viva México! defined by the author himself as an esperpento. This grotesque vision of the world is interesting not only for its aesthetic aspects, but also for its historical, social, political and moral dimensions.
