Popularization of reading in different regions of the world at the beginning of the XXI century

The urgency of the study is due to the fact that throughout the year the students-publishers, headed by the Professor Osmolovska O. A., are working on the project “Kyiv – World Book Capital”. One of the areas of the project work is the study of foreign experience in popularization of reading. The article is devoted to the peculiarities of development of the book publishing industry and popularization of reading in different regions of the world at the beginning of the XXI century. The peculiarities of the modern publishing industry formation of the United Arab Emirates (by the decision of UNESCO the city of Sharjah has become the World Book Capital of 2019) has been explored, the modern mechanisms of popularization of reading in Brazil, New Zealand, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Iceland have been studied. During the study, the peculiarities of the state policy in relation to the publishing activity of each country, the issues of social and cultural development, the achievements of publishing sector, the state and creative committees, public associations involved in popularization of reading in the countries whose experience was studied were identified. The study made an excursion into history, ascertains the leading publishing organizations, describes the international cooperation of publishing organizations and their influence on formation of readers’ preferences, both in their own country and far beyond its borders. As a result of the study, the potential of these countries as the modern centers of publishing is outlined.
