SPEECH PECULIARITIES OF AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGISTS: FOCUS ON PHONETICS
Abstract
Purpose. The aim of this paper is to describe phonetic features of American anthropologists’ speech. The research is carried out in the framework of identification linguistics – lingvopersonology. The paper is focused on phonetic peculiarities of American anthropologists’ speech, i.e. their intonation dominant features. Materials and Methods. The authors analyzed spoken conversations and interviews given by American anthropologists. In this paper the authors used WaveSurfer programme to process and visualize speech patterns, as well as «TRUD» system developed by L.M. Makarov that allowed the authors to accurately transcribe and mark the texts produced by American anthropologists. Results and Discussions. The paper states phonetic features that are most specific for anthropologists, i.e. logical pauses, interrogative intonation patterns, tendency to imitate phonetic characteristics, reaction to extra-linguistic factors, etc. The research proves that phonetic phenomena, identified during the analysis of American anthropologists’ speech, largely derive from their professional activities. Practical Implications. This study is part of a growing body of research on speech portraits of different professional groups. Therefore, this paper will contribute to future research on similar topics.
