In early May 1728 Louis de l'Isle de la Croyère, the extraordinary academician of the Academy of Sciences and Arts in St. Petersburg, carried out in Arkhangelsk one of the first in the world and the first in the Russian Empire measurement of gravity. In 1733–1741 he participated in the «Great Northern Expedition», led by Vitus Bering. While sailing on the ship «St. Pavel» under the command of A.I. Chirikov to the shores of America and after they discovered the Aleutian Islands, he died of scurvy and was buried on the site of the present city Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. May 2028 marks the 300th anniversary of Russian gravimetry, and it's time to start preparing for the celebration of this event.
