Based on Nettelbeck’s comment onL’Immoraliste, questioning the need forsuch a book, this article re-visits the maincharacter of the novel, Michel and attemptsto define the traits that identify him. Focusingon individualism and anarchism astrends contemporary to Gide, it aims atproving the relevance of such a book intoday’s world and to shed yet a new lighton the libertarian aspirations of its author.
