The Impacts of the Migraine and Tension Type Headache on Health Related Quality of Life

Purpose: Migraine and tension type headache (TTH) are common chronic clinical entities. This study is aimed to evaluate the impacts of the migraine and TTH on health related quality of life (HRQoL). Material and Methods: International Headache Society (IHS) 2004 criteria were used for classification of headache and 30 migraine, 30 tension-type headache including total 60 cases as well as 30 healthy volunteers were included in the study.Short Form-36 (SF-36) quality of life questionnaire applied to all three groups. participants to evaluate the health related quality of life. Results: Control group consisted of 15 men and 15 women, the average age of the group was 33,30±(8,29). Migraine group consisted of 10 men and 20 women, the average age of the group was 33,93±(11,16). TTH group consisted of 8 men and 22 women, the average age of the group was 35,70±(11,62). Both migraine and TTH groups, in all dimensions of SF-36, had lower scores than the control group. Migraine and TTH groups had similar scores in General health, Bodily pain, Mental health, Vitality and Role-emotional subscales (p>0,05). But migraineurs had significantly lower scores in Physical functioning, Role-physical and Social functioning than patients with TTH (p<0,05). Conclusion: This study shows that migraine and TTH, are important health problems which decrease the quality of life when compared with healthy control groups.
