In Sermo 257, as well as in the rest of his sermons considering Ps 115. 2 («All men are liars»), St Augustine reads the verse as referring to the fallen state of man, which can be cured by the divine grace only. In Sermo 257 he cites as examples of «human» (i. e. fallen) lie and divinely inspired sooth-saying two sentences of the same character, apostle Peter (Mt 16. 16–23).
