Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Defense in Children with Varying Degrees of Bronchial Asthma Control

The article presents the results of researches of indicators of oxidative modification of proteins (OMP) and antioxidant enzymes activity in children with bronchial asthma (BA), depending on the degree of disease control. The study involved 107 children aged from 10 to 18 years, who suffered from BA in the exacerbation phase. We found that children with a low degree of control have a prooxidant activation, manifested by a significant increase of the level of oxidation-modified proteins. Thus, index of OMP-356 0.293 ± 0.006 c.u. was significantly higher in children with uncontrolled bronchial asthma (UCBA) compared with patients from other groups (p < 0.05). The maximum value of the OMP-370 was registered in the group of patients with UCBA. This parameter was significantly higher than thereof in the patients with the highest level of disease (p < 0.05). Another trend was observed in terms of indicators of OMP-430 content. Thus, significant increase in its level occurred only in children with UCBA (pN < 0.05). Content of OMP-530 in children with UCBA have much in common with the rate of the control group, and in children of partially controlled and controlled bronchial asthma we noted probable decline of indices compared with healthy persons (pN < 0.05). At the same time, in these patients the antioxidant protection was diminished, confirming a significant reduction in activity of superoxide dismutase enzymes and especially catalase.
