The expeditions to Salinas Grandes (a salt deposit in the current department of Atreucó, La Pampa province) started in colonial times and gathered an important amount of actors since their objective was to provide salt to the city of Buenos Aires. Here we present some unpublished documents regarding those expeditions which are located in the Biblioteca Nacional de Río de Janeiro(BNRJ) and the Archivo General de la Nación, Buenos Aires (AGN). We also offer information about the above-mentioned trips based on written papers already published to pose a reflection on the production and reproduction of this type of historical sources and the ethnographical data on specific issues they can convey.
