The accurate and reliable estimation of irrigation water requirements is essential for efficient water resource management. Evapotranspiration (ET) is a significant factor in irrigation water consumption. It is the combination of evaporation from the soil and transpiration from the leaf surface. Proper estimation of ET is required to understand water resource management, crop water requirement analysis, drought monitoring, etc. ET depends on several factors such as weather conditions, land type, soil type, crops, etc., and its accurate estimation on a large spatial scale is a challenge. Many methods have been developed to estimate ET over the past few decades, and satellite-based ET estimation is one among them. This article reviews remote sensing-based ET estimations such as SEBI, SEBS, SSEB-op, TSM, SEBAL, METRIC, and Modified Priestley-Taylor. Their merits, demerits, and suggestions are also discussed. This study gives more insight into the importance of remote sensing-based ET estimation.
