Mitochondria and Parkinson’s disease: genetic contributions to understanding the pathogenic process
Abstract
Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerativedisorder. Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a major role in thepathogenesis of this disorder. Studies on monogenic forms ofparkinsonism have significantly contributed to understanding thisprocess. We reviewed our understanding of the role of these genes inmitochondrial dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease.
