Image of Holy Great Martyr Barbara in Ukrainian graphics of 17th-18th centuries
Abstract
The aim of the research has been to study the iconography of the image of Holy Great Martyr Saint Barbara in the Ukrainian graphics of the 17th-18th centuries, the composition structure, the principles of formation and semantics of this thematic cycle using easel graphic and illustrations of Ukrainian old printed books from the collections of V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine. The research methodology is based on iconographical and iconological methods along with comparative art-study analysis of Saint Barbara's image embodiment in icon painting and graphics. Scientific novelty of the study is in broadening the concept concerning the iconography of St. Barbara image in the sacral art and literature of the Ukrainian Baroque epoch. The works belonging to various kinds of figurative art (icon painting, monumental painting, easel engraving and book illustration) are used to examine the iconography of St. Barbara image in Ukrainian engravings (solitary portrayals and hagiographic images of the saint's life, old-print illustrations) of the chronological period mentioned and of their specific features and differences. Conclusions. The article notes that Ukrainian artists of the Baroque period, when depicting Great Martyr St. Barbara created a distinct national cult of the dignified young woman, very beautiful, spiritually pure, eager to learn, firm in her believes. At the same time, the image of St. Barbara in the engravings made by Ukrainian artisans, is not canonical, and its expressiveness and perception entirely depends on the talent, imagination and tastes of the artists, the level of their artistic and technical skills.
