This study analyzes: i) the historical background of South American integration, in order to highlight the importance of an autonomous and multidimensional project; ii) the legacy of the Union of South American Nations (Usan), its successes, failures and vulnerabilities, to rethink an institutional model taking into account the weaknesses; iii) the existing alternatives for Usan, since it is understood that no framework has the strategic potential of Usan; and iv) the reforms that must be carried out to ensure the long-term sustainability of this integration project.
