The Importance of Neoliberalism to Brazil's WTO Entry and to Multilateralism as a New Governmental Policy
Abstract
The article aims to address Brazil’s adherence in the World Trade Organization (WTO), which was established in January 1995, as a founding member. Through internal and systemic analysis during the 1980’s and 1990’s decades, it examines the various factors that influenced the country to follow neoliberal policies, including the rapid approval of the WTO constitutive treaty by the Brazilian’s legislative and executive. It is possible to notice the interest by the Brazilian leaders to figure as a founding member of the Organization as a reflection of new external politics e economics approach in Brazil, based on multilateralism and neoliberal ideals.
