Profile of Male Perpetrators of Violence Against Woman: A Documentary Analysis
Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyze the profile of male perpetrators of domestic violence in order to contribute to coping and prevention strategies. This is a qualitative documentary research based on data sheets of the researched support center that is located in a capital of the northeastern region of Brazil, recognized for its high rates of violence against women. The records of 241 men were analyzed, covering the period from September 2012 to September 2017. The main results corroborate with studies found in the literature, indicating that the majority of men had a relationship with the victim, belonged to impoverished groups and perpetrated physical violence. Moreover, the results show that the profile found refers to a structurally criminalizable class, demonstrating the criminal selectivity that exists in our society, which focuses on the state of power relations between social classes. The data also pointed out aspects related to the blame / accountability of women for the violence suffered.
