Impact of Platelet-rich Fibrin with Coronally Advanced Flap at Recessions

Abstract

Aim or Purpose: The aim of present study is to appraise the clinical effect of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in combination with coronally advanced flap (CAF) in the treatment of Miller's Class I gingival recessions. Materials and Methods: 16 systemically healthy individuals (12 female/4 male) who had diagnosed Miller's Class I recession defects, in the age group 24-49 were included in this study. The approval of Ethics Committee (EC) was received from IU EC (Decision No: 2013/1044). A total of 47 recession sites were recruited at this randomized controlled clinical study. The defects were randomly assigned into test (CAF+PRF) and control (CAF) groups. In the test group adequate amount of blood was drawn and PRF membranes were prepared prior to the surgery. The processed membranes were stabilized on the defects and covered with CAF. Clinical measurements such as probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, recession height, width, keratinized tissue height, flap thickness and root coverage percentage were recorded at baseline, 10th day, 6th week, 3rd and 6th month postsurgery. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS 22. p<0.05 was considered statistically significant at statistical analysis. Results: Recession depth, recession width and clinical attachment levels were improved in both groups. Thickness of keratinized gingiva was increased in a statistically siginificant level in test group. Conclusions: Findings of this study indicate that PRF can be useful to increase the thickness of keratinized gingiva but it has no additional effect on clinical parameters compared to CAF alone
