Le cadre temporel, un concept à l’épreuve de deux thèses temporalistes

Abstract

William Grossin, French father of temporalism, has conceptualized several tools to allow an empirically access to the different times of human activities. The “temporal framework” is a central one of his proposal, which aims to delimit temporal spaces and study the substance of the times contained therein. We first present the way in which we have mobilized the temporal framework in each of our recent theses in sociology to analyze the times of shared physical custody or those of vocational educational training. Then, we discuss the relevance and limits of a concept originally built around the industrial time. We show that the concept is not useful to understand the flexible times of other activities, especially women's. Then, we argue that the links between external and internal times deserve to be more explicit. We assert that individual temporal experience has little place in the model and finally claim that the concept is static. We conclude by suggesting a switch to a more flexible concept of “temporal stage”.
