Abstract

This article explores some of Ippolito Nievo’s intertextual strategies (reuse, rewriting, reinterpretation) in Confessioni d’un Italiano (1867). In his work, Nievo draws on different materials, such as fictional documents with a narrative structure capable of conveying acts of memory; actual historiographic sources (usually undeclared); ancient and modern literature. Several explicit quotations frequently appear to be stereotyped and easily re-employed tesserae, often reworking other parts of Nievo’s output.
