In this article, we support the idea that STS education in science education encompasses common goals of scientific literacy; but that, however, STS education should not be confused as if it fully corresponds to scientific literacy purposes. In the beginning, it is made a characterization of STS education in science education in its different views, and it is shown data that demonstrate the growing movement in the research in Brazil in the STS science education field. From these characterizations, we conclude, pointing out contributions of the STS education to science education for citizen ship. It is highlighted that STS education should not be seen merely as a slogan, but as an important area to scientific literacy, which has well-defined parameters. We point out also that science education cannot be reduced to the purposes of education STS, since that other issues should be encompassed in science education, so that it achieves its goals which go beyond understanding the complex STS relationships
