Abstract

his article analyses the first English translations and adaptations of the work by Spanish writer Juan Valera: Pepita Jiménez, which is one of the most prominent costumbrista novels in the 19th century. It studies the translation process in both the North-American and the British editions, examining similarities and differences not only in layout and structure but also in the target text. The author himself supervised the editing process in some cases, making him one of the first Spanish writers to negotiate his own projection in the English-speaking publishing market.
