The lycée Françoise-Combes, high school of excellence in Montpellier, illustrates the history and the making of a place part of heritage. Fortified by a centuries-long history, this area was successively a noble residence, a military barracks and an educational institution. Our contribution aims to understand how actions to enhance and protect heritage have an influence on the evolution of the principles and practices of the users of this school. We therefore specify the singular history of this institution in the light of the successive heritage designations. Then we show how the process for granting heritage status makes visible the invisible of such spaces, which we will call "school landscapes". Finally, these heritages enable us to think about their possible compatibilities or divergences with the educational intentions of this French educational institution of the 21th century.
