Political Holidays of Modern Ukraine: Origins, Features, Trends
Abstract
The purpose of the article is to identify the sources, features of functioning and trends in the development of modern political holidays in Ukraine. Research methodology consists of applying factual, comparative, analytical, and historical and logical methods. This approach makes it possible to identify the features of the functioning of Ukrainian political holidays, to carry out their typology, to highlight the specific features of each of the groups and to determine the possibility of enhancing their community consolidating potential. Results. Over the years of independence, the country’s holiday palette has undergone significant changes. It was concluded that the political holidays of Ukraine can be divided into 3 groups: «traditional», inherited from the totalitarian past; introduced since the restoration of Ukrainian statehood before the Revolution of Dignity; the latest, introduced since 2014. Among them, almost all are introduced or regulated by regulatory acts of various sources. However, their ritual component requires rooting and processing by specialists for conformity with the authentic sacred and aesthetic principles of Ukrainian culture. Another division of holidays into groups of traumatic and triumphal series demonstrates the predominance of holidays associated with historical trauma. It was predicted balancing of these groups of holidays in perspective. The novelty of the work is to systematize the modern political holidays of Ukraine, identify their sources, place in public life and cultural status, as well as identify possible further trends in their development towards strengthening their consolidating potential due to being saturated with authentic Ukrainian ritual forms. The practical significance. The research has important implications for studying the ceremonial and ritual components of political holidays in Ukraine, identifying the possibilities for their transformation in accordance with Ukrainian national traditions and strengthening the consolidating potential of political holidays.
