The article presents the results of studying the processes connected with Graphon functioning as a phonetic means of characters’ pathological speech representation. The relevance of the topic is stipulated by scientists’ interest to the distinctive features of speech, realized by fiction characters suffering from various forms of aphasia, stuttering and other cognitive disturbances. Particular emphasis is placed on the consideration of changes occurring at the phonetic linguistic level. The aim of the study is to analyze the functional exuberance of the Graphon as a means that can convey various defects of human speech in writing, as well as determine which changes in the phonetic structure of speech utterances convey deviations from normative spelling when using a Graphon. Methodology. The study was made by the use of a certain set of complementary methods: a comparative analysis method and a method of scientifically fixed observation. Together with reaching the main goal of the study, we can get the answers to the accessory questions concerning the role of this phonetic device in revealing the image of a fiction character, which, in turn, provides the basis for investigating the influence of pathological speech on readers’ perception. The basis of the practical part is the text of Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and particularly the pathological and deviant speech of certain characters. The changes in their speech at the phonetic level and the transmission of these changes into writing are analyzed here in detail. The research results suggest the notion of the role and function of the Graphon as a means of expressing pathological speech, as well as the techniques of its operation in creating the fiction text. The field of practical implications of these results is supposed to be training students of philology in phonostylistics and phonosemantics.
