History and Memory. Santiago de Cuba and the Historical Cross-Road of 1898

Abstract

This article analyzes the impact in Santiago de Cuba of the war in 1898, which had as its main theater of the city itself and its surroundings. Due to this fact, the people of Santiago directly felt the effects of a conflict that was resolved before his eyes, and that meant shortages, hunger and death. But also they had to endure, first, the excessive and unjustified euphoria of the most reactionary circles Spanishness of the time the battered squad Pascual Cervera makes his hasty entry into the Santiago harbor and then the frustration of seeing how, with the Yankee interference, the desire for freedom. Similarly, it reviews and have now been recorded in the commemorative sculptural work of the city and the local historiographical production.
