Performance and analysis of sputtered carbide inserts in CNC machining
Abstract
In this modern world, machines play an important role in all types of manufacturing automobile industries. Out of this, CNC machines play a more vital role in precision than manual lathes. It provides the best precision and consistency unmatched by a manual lathe process. It is a process in which pre-programmed computer software dictates the movement of machines and factory tool equipment. Hence, this allows manufacturers to produce components in less time, reducing scrap and also safety. CNC controls a wide range of complex machines such as lathes, grinders, etc., CNC Machining is the process of cutting or removing material from a part with a cutting tool to achieve the desired shape. This technique aims to increase the life & quality of the cutting tool by improving its hardness by using DC magnetron sputtering to coat a thin film of tungsten carbide. The carbide insert must be characterized by its chemical composition, microstructure, grain distribution, and surface roughness. Further, the hardness & bonding efficiency test has to be carried out through Nano indentation and scratch test process.
