Using altruism in project management education: How ‘Doing Good’ impacts student motivation

Abstract

Data derived from a project-based learning course, Actual Project Management Experience in the Master of Project Management program at Reykjavik University in Iceland, augments earlier findings from studies on project management education. It shows the importance of active learning and actual project experience as an integrated part of students' educational journeys. The study compared projects where the altruistic dynamic was clearly at play and projects where the altruistic motive was absent. The finding is that the altruistic social meaning greatly sparked students' motivation. Based on this, it is speculated whether the altruistic tendency, i.e. human desire to do good and contribute to society's greater good, could not inspire project leaders and managers in general.
