This article deals with the conception of freedom as a way of overcoming conscious reality. With this in mind, the author points out the understanding of freedom in Russian religious philosophy in which freedom is considered to be the realization of creative poten-tiality. This interpretation of freedom came about through argumentation with the propo-nents of positivism who underlined the defi nitive importance of methodology of scientifi c knowledge. The article also treats the concept of the philosophical tradition as a phenome-non of the intellectual culture which constitutes the inner form of the philosopher. It is pre-supposed that tradition as a given, or as the static condition of consciousness, is overcome by the creative act as a result of a personal inquiry into the fundamentals of thought
