Morphostructural characters of <em>Elephas (Palaeoloxodon) creutzburgi</em> (Kuss, 1965) femur from Simonelli Cave (Rethymnon, Crete) / Caratteri morfostrutturali del femore di <em>Elephas (Palaeoloxodon) creutzburgi</em> (Kuss, 1965) di Grotta Simonelli (Rethymnon, Creta)

Abstract

<strong>Abstract</strong> In this paper a femur of <em>Elephas (Palaeoloxodon) creutzburgi</em> (Kuss, 1965) of Late Pleistocene age, from Simonelli Cave (Rethymnon, Crete), is described. This femur is characterized by morphostructural and functional changes due from one hand to the reduction of the graviportal function as a result of reduced size and from the other to the adaptation at a more speedy also in relatively irregular grounds. <strong>Riassunto</strong> Viene descritto un femore di <em>Elephas (Palaeoloxodon) creutzburgi</em> (Kuss, 1965) del Pleistocene superiore di Grotta Simonelli (Rethymnon, Creta), caratterizzato da variazioni morfostrutturali e funzionali dovute sia alla riduzione della funzione portante, indotta dalla diminuzione di taglia, sia all'acquisizione di una certa attitudine ad un passo più agile e veloce che su terreni relativamente accidentati.
