The Examen de la composición de Andrómaco, the only work known of Juan de Liaño thus far, was published in Burgos in 1546. It is a pharmacological dialogue focused on the theriac in which the interlocutors address the critical analysis of the common practices of Castilian apothecaries as well as the exam of several ancient, medieval and Renaissance sources. This work aims at determining the stance of Graduate Juan de Liaño on the controversy about the sources of authority of the medical knowledge that confronted several intellectual currents within the medical-academic field of the European renaissance. To do so, some sources included in the text are identified and the argumentation posed in the debate by the dialogue’s interlocutors is analysed. Thus, the work also intends to proceed with the reconstruction of this not so well known author as well as to place his work in the frame of the scientific context of its time.
