La catégorie du « mythe » (mũthos) dans le discours de Strabon

Abstract

Despite reluctance displayed in front of “myths” (mũthoi), that can be explained by the Geography project, consisting of a pragmatic description of the places of the inhabited world, Strabo nevertheless relates a large number of “myths” and discourses about the gods. In order to understand this apparent contradiction, this article proposes to examine the use of “myths”, from an “emic” point of view, in Geography and to analyze the different functions that this category has in Strabo’s general discourse in order to define it.
