Balancing talent and technology: Navigating cybersecurity and privacy in SMEs

Abstract

This study examines the complexities of cybersecurity and privacy in Canadian SMEs, emphasizing the nuanced interplay of internal motivations and external pressures. Utilizing a conceptual model that integrates 'push' and 'pull' dynamics, the research identifies five major controversies impacting SMEs' cybersecurity discourses, including divergent perceptions of cybersecurity and privacy, varying levels of education, financial constraints, misaligned roles with third-party providers, and ineffective government communication. The study concludes with actionable recommendations, including incentives, trusted resources, enhanced communication, clear messaging, and enforcement measures, aimed at bolstering SMEs' cybersecurity and privacy posture.
