The etymology of the lexeme yogurt which has been borrowed by world languages from Turkish lies in the phrase “to put milk to sleep”, which lives along with yogurt. In historical and contemporary Turkish dialects the verb “put to sleep” is used with denotations such as “fermenting milk, making yogurt”. The phrase “put to sleep” which means fermenting milk both in the past and in today’s usage direct us to the etymology of the lexeme yogurt and we have tried to examine the origins of the lexeme yogurt in this paper.
