For over two centuries, the mule in Jujuy and Salta was a relevant and specialized activity, involving different sectors of society, from business elites to the grassroots, farmers and Indigenous and which were the hallmark of a work carried out at regional level tending to generate surpluses. These same characteristics are what allow us to use it as an object of study to understand, beyond the activity itself, the multiple relationships that are woven between the various sectors of society. This paper describes the characteristics of the mule colonial and early republic in an area of northwestern Argentina, continuity and transformations over two centuries.
