Factors Affecting the Development of Parenting Styles in Families of Andimeshk City

Abstract

The purpose of present study was to investigate the effective cultural, religious and economic factors in the formation of parenting styles in Andimeshk city families. The research was carried out by using mixed method exploratory design which implies collecting qualitative and quantitative methods. For doing so, Baumrind questionnaire and semi-structured interview were administered in quantitative and qualitative parts respectively. The study population consisted of 95 females high school students in Andimesk city from which 75 students through simple random method were drawn. Then an interview with fifteen parents of the sample group were conducted. Quantitate data were analyzed by using frequency and percent distribution and qualitative by utilizing coding and categorization. The results revealed the predominant parenting style among parents was authoritative; parents’ religious beliefs, cultural atmosphere as well as economic status of the families were effective in determining parenting style. Results generally indicated that all of above factors were effective in child rearing.
