Distribution system is known with high power losses due to his topology and its composition. Introduction of shunt capacitor into the system can brings about power loss minimizations, voltage profile and stability index improvement and loss cost reduction. In order to achieve this, shunt capacitor optimal location and sizing must be ensured as wrong location may result in unwanted effect on the system. This paper aims to minimize the total power loss and cost and also to enhance the voltage profile and stability index of distribution systems by optimal allocation of shunt capacitor, using whale optimization algorithm (WOA). The technique was validated on IEEE 33-bus system and also applied to a practical Nigerian Dada 46-bus network. The results proved that the technique proposed reduced the total power losses and cost. Also, voltage profile and voltage stability index were significantly improved.
