The article focuses on Hamlet Travestie, a parodic mash-up of Hamlet by Punta Corsara, a theater company born from a workshop for teens held by director Marco Martinelli in the notorious Scampia district in Naples. Hamlet Travestie combines Shakespeare’s original with an 19th century English burlesque version and a parody of Goethe’s Faust by the great Neapolitan actor Antonio Petito. Set in contemporary Scampia, the story centers on an adolescent named Hamlet who plunges into madness after reading Shakespeare’s play. To bring him back to his senses, his raucous family stages a drama mixing farce and tragedy, poetry and dialect, reflecting the violent tensions at play in today’s Naples.
