A culture of failed elections: revisiting democratic elections in Nigeria, 1959-2003
Abstract
Una Cultura de fallidas elecciones: Examen de las elecciones democráticas en Nigeria, 1959 – 2003Este documento ofrece una breve información sobre la historia de las elecciones democráticas en Nigeria desde 1959. Procedió a analizar los factores que impiden el crecimiento de una democracia estable y creíble, libres y justas elecciones en Nigeria. El documento también explica el significado, naturaleza y las formas de abusos electorales en Nigeria. Se también debatió la crisis resultante y el camino a seguir por el Gobierno de Nigeria. En total, el documento concluye que la falta de creíbles, libres y justas elecciones en Nigeria ha sido responsable por el estancamiento político, social y económico del país.Palabras claves: Democracia, elecciones, proceso electoral, Nigeria, política.___________________________ABSTRACT:This paper gives a brief insight into the history of democratic elections in Nigeria since 1959. It proceeds to analyse the factors that have inhibited the growth of a stable democracy and the conduct of credible, free and fair elections in Nigeria. An attempt is also made to explain the meaning, nature and forms of electoral malpractices in Nigeria. The resultant crises and the way forward for the Nigerian polity have also been brought under focus. In all, the paper concludes that the lack of credible, free and fair elections in Nigeria has been responsible for the social, economic, and political stagnation of the country.Keywords: Democracy, Elections, Electoral Process, Nigeria, Politics.
