Hyperbaric oxygen therapy services at the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital hyperbaric oxygen therapy Center: A retrospective epidemiological study

Abstract Introduction The aim of this retrospective epidemiological study is to analyze the characteristics and caseload of patients treated at the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) Center in Hong Kong from 2018 to 2023 to gain insight into the HBOT service provision and development in HK. Methods Data were extracted from patient treatment records, referral records, and discharge summaries obtained from the PYNEH HBOT Center. The study focuses on analyzing the growth of service provision, demand patterns, utilization rates, and adverse events associated with HBOT. Results The findings revealed a significant increase in service provision at the PYNEH HBOT Center over the study period. The demand for HBOT services in Hong Kong has also steadily increased, particularly for elective and semiurgent indications. However, the utilization of HBOT for problem wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, has remained low compared with international standards. Emergency cases, including carbon monoxide poisoning, central retinal artery occlusion, and decompression sickness, constitute a substantial workload at the Center. Middle ear barotrauma has been identified as a significant complication, warranting further attention and intervention. Conclusion This study provides valuable insights into the growth, challenges, and outcomes of the HBOT service at the PYNEH HBOT Center. The findings highlight the need for strategic planning to meet the increasing demand for HBOT services in Hong Kong, to improve utilization for problem wounds, and to enhance patient safety. These findings contribute to evidence‐based planning and quality improvement in HBOT service provision.
