Factors affecting Vietnamese small and medium enterprises’ ability to get environmental standard certificates (ESC)

Abstract

This research investigates factors affecting Vietnamese small and medium enterprises’ (SMEs) ability to obtain Environmental Standards Certification (ESC). Logit regression was used for cross-sectional data collected from 2,575 Vietnamese SMEs. The results show that factors such as owner/manager characteristics (gender, ethnicity, and education), firm size, management system, labour union and knowledge of environmental law affect firm’s ability to achieve ESC. Based on the results, some solutions have been suggested to help increase SMEs’ ability to obtain ESC and thus contribute to environmental protection in Vietnam.
