The text conducts a critical interpretation of the concept of social representations and its heuristic value, as an important category to understand processes of communication and meaning today, by contrasting schools, authors and contributions of knowledge from an in-depth critical bibliographical-documentary analysis. In this regard, we propose a theoretical revision of the links between social representations and very close terms such as attitude, image, opinion, stereotypes, social perception, ideology and habitus, trying to establish epistemological limits between them. Then, we focus in particular on the connections between representations and mediations from the Latin American perspective in Communication as field. Thus, we see a certain bonding between the categories whose exploration may prove interesting for the development of mediations as a relevant theoretical system to understand inter-subjectivity phenomena.
