Management of Inpatient Hyperglycemia – An Interactive Seminar
Abstract
Abstract Introduction Diabetes management in the hospital is often ignored. The reason is usually from lack of practical knowledge of hospital diabetes management on the part of the clinician. This submission hopes to overcome that lack of knowledge. These materials were developed in order to fill an educational void. Medical students and residents often have little to no formal curriculum on the topic of blood glucose management in the inpatient setting. Their only training is experiential (e.g., during clinical care on the inpatient wards) and often without much oversight. Given the importance of effectively learning inpatient diabetes management, we wanted to create a more enduring curriculum that could be tailored to and administered to learners at all levels in a variety of settings, from third-year medical students on up. Methods This resource attempts to establish the basic building blocks of knowledge required to understand and implement inpatient diabetes management plans. In it we provide a PowerPoint lecture on this topic as well as an instructor's guide, quiz, and other related hand-outs. The didactic slides should take 60-75 minutes to complete with the quiz slides taking another 10-15 minutes. Results We received excellent feedback on this. With an audience response system we tested the students' pre- and postpresentation knowledge and found significant improvement. Discussion We have used this presentation for medical student and resident education. This has allowed us the residents and students to have a practical working knowledge of hospital diabetes management.
