In women of reproductive age with autoimmune thyroiditis, who lived in Sumy city no less than 10 years (n = 50) and in Krolevetsky district of the Sumy region (n = 30), we investigated the level of selenium in the hair using atomic absorption spectrometer. The state of thyroid gland was assessed by parameters of ultrasound investigation, the levels of free thyroxine, antithyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase antibodies. It was found that women living in Krolevetsky area showed a higher rate of reduction of selenium in their hair than in women living in Sumy, which is accompanied by an increase in thyroid volume and significantly higher frequency of nodules in it.
