Abstract
The media has the right to treat pain on a physical, emotional, individual or social scale, always seeking a balance between closeness and detachment in order to describe the phenomenon and to have a global view. When dealing with pain, care is to be taken to avoid routine, excessive involvement or value judgements, on the basis of professional ethics and within a framework of freedom and responsibility. Television is an open win-dow on the world, which must provide a service to the audience – also with the so-called reality shows – by adequately framing events in real context but never procuring delight from the suffering of others.
